Introduction
A proponent of the Scots Baronial style - blending Gothic with motifs
from Scottish vernacular, notably castles - Bryce created some of the
best quality Victorian buildings in Scotland. His work was mostly in southeast
Scotland, principally in the capital.
One building which many people in Edinburgh often mention to me as being
one of their favourites is the Bank of Scotland in St Andrew Square by
David Bryce: it contains a beautiful unpedimented portico rising above
a subtle podium, with generously-proportioned statues atop each column.
The result is a rich but digestible composition that is very attractive.
Another key building by Bryce in Edinburgh is Fettes College which can
be seen from many points, especially in north Edinburgh. Again the architect
seems to take building elements to their extreme with a huge, soaring
tower.
