Drumsheugh Gardens : New Town Apartments

Premier Burrell project by Smith Scott Mullan Architects

Project Title: Drumsheugh Gardens
Location: Edinburgh
Client: Premier Burrell
Date built: 2006

Designed for Premier Burrell, one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious development companies, this project involved the conversion of a former B listed nursing home in the heart of Edinburgh’s West End into high quality apartments.

The building comprised three original Victorian Townhouses, each five storeys high. These have been sensitively restored and converted into twenty-one modern apartments, ranging from extensive three bedroom family units to a compact bed-sit with sleeping gallery.

A number of insensitive alterations added throughout the life of the building were removed and the building was restored as close as possible back to its former glory. The high ceilings and generous proportions of the existing rooms were used to maximum advantage and as many of the original features as possible were retained and restored.

To contrast with the traditional, heavily ornate interior, the new interventions which provide kitchens and bathrooms within the building were treated in a very contemporary way and kept as minimal and simple as possible.

This project integrates old and new elements to create a range of highly individual, high specification apartments. Most units have dual aspect and the upper floor apartments have the added advantage of providing extensive views of the sea and Fife coastline.
