Terry Farrell on Edinburgh
Sir Terry Farrell told BBC Scotland: "Edinburgh is changing....changes
aren't being welded together, the resources aren't there to do it, it's
reactive, we are looking at each of the piecemeal bits and saying whether
we like them or not. My view is this investment should partly come from
central government, I don't think it is putting enough into what is Scotland's
greatest city."

Sean Connery - 007 Hits Out

Sir Sean in his book 'Being a Scot', out today, praises the "imaginative"
work of Edinburgh architects Allan Murray, Malcolm Fraser, Richard Murphy,
Charlie Sutherland and Charlie Hussey, & approves of the Scottish
Parliament building (above) + Oloroso
restaurant (below).

Vigourous attacks on modern Edinburgh include despair at the threat of
the city losing UNESCO world heritage status, possibly due to the proposed
Caltongate (below).

He suggests we should learn from Copenhagen (Ed. a view I've expressed
on this site a number of times in the past). Unusually praise for Allan
Murray and Malcolm Fraser sits alongside concerns re Caltongate, in which
both are involved to varying extents.

He also praised Richard Murphy's "beautiful" designs for the
Sean Connery Filmhouse
proposed for Festival Square (above).

More Delays

Despite hopes of an upturn in the market within the coming year more major
capital projects appear to be stalled by the credit crunch, as reported
by the Evening News today:
- 224-home Granton Waterfront development by Taylor Wimpey
- 171-home former Tartan Club development, Fountainbridge by Buredi (site
photo above)
- 100-home Ocean Drive development at Albert Dock, Leith by CALA
- 73-home Madelvic car factory development at Granton Park Avenue by Buredi
- 75-home Pitsligo Road development, Morningside by Telereal Services
The 'credit crunch' has deepened Edinburgh's housing crisis with little
progress on the 12,000 new affordable homes apparently needed in the next
decade. Many schemes with planning permission are on hold, but if and
when developers restart projects they will be hit by new planning legislation,
adding to losses. 190808

Bland & Undistinguished

Magnus Linklater considers Allan Murray Architects' masterplans and big
developments to be "bland and undistinguished".
But the architect has refuted claims that he puts "mediocrity before
imagination or beauty" to win favour with Edinburgh planners saying
the practice's designs are subjected to "intense scrutiny by the
prospective clients, judging panels or our peers".
Former Scottish Arts Council chairman and Times columnist Magnus Linklater
accused Allan Murray of producing architecture which is out of step with
the "elegance of older-style Edinburgh".
AMA are masterplanners for the controversial Caltongate project but also
the St James Quarter and SoCo at the Edinburgh Old Town fire site.
Allan Murray is quoted as saying: "These same projects are also closely
scrutinised by the City of Edinburgh planning officials and councillors,
Historic Scotland and the Scottish Government's design advisor group Architecture
& Design Scotland and in many cases through detailed public consultation.
A number of our high-profile projects also have the benefit of being collaborative
efforts."
The Times has a massive international readership and this story has already
been picked up abroad by the likes of archnewsnow.com, not to mention
the world's largest architecture website, www.e-architect.co.uk

Caltongate Problems

As developments in the capital grind to a halt and architects lay off
staff the latest casualty is the major Caltongate
scheme: a "procedural mistake" has been made by the planners

Lack of liquidity from the banks and rising material costs have combined
to lower developers' yields developers.
