£25m expansion of Cameron Toll shopping centre set for Approval

The proposal for the extension to the Cameron Toll complex would include retail, restaurant and leisure space.

It is thought that a second anchor store would be created on the site as well as around ten other retail units, six new restaurants, a roof-top terrace and a cinema with five screens.

Planning officials have recommended that the application be granted, but councillors will have the final say at a meeting on Wednesday 9 Feb.

Among some of the concerns expressed by individuals and groups was traffic congestion, the height of the expansion, loss of views to Arthur’s Seat, possible extended opening hours in a letter to the city council.

The Mall was built on the field next to Nether Liberton. A large Sainsbury Savacentre store formed the core.

A petrol station was added to the Centre in the early nineties. The car park was extended in 1996 to within a few feet of Liberton Bank House. This house was lived in by Arthur Conan Doyle whilst at school in Edinburgh in the 1860s.

The House was threatened with demolition to make way for a 100-seat McDonalds. Liberton Bank House is reputedly the oldest surviving building connected with Conan Doyle. There was a strong campaign to save Liberton Bank House, once within the rural village of Nether Liberton.

Liberton Bank House was delisted in 1997.

Following the purchase of the Cameron Toll foodcourt – now to be called Food on the Mezz – by Comcatco a major refurbishment is scheduled, possibly in 2004. Comcatco run 14 high profile foodcourts within shopping centres such as Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow.
