Design Beyond Words is a bookshop in Blair Street, a refurbishment of an Old Town building. The store is located just down the hill from Hunter Square, which lies roughly in the middle of the capital’s Royal Mile.

Designed by Oliver Chapman Architects, the shop is run by Neil and his partner. The pair have a serious commitment to architecture and can play an important role in helping to lift the standard of, at least, our aspirations and hopefully our built environment itself.

Blair St was the site of Richard Murphy Architects’ offices, half way down on the east side. It is also home to a labyrinthine network of chambers below Edinburgh’s South Bridge. These historic spaces with a storied past are sited on the East side behind the units lining the street.
There are several different sections of vaults, all located beneath the South Bridge. Edinburgh’s underground vaults are centuries old and were built in the late 18th-century.
The vaults were built between the bridge’s centuries old arches. The arches vary in size, and some form part of pubs and nightclubs located along the bridge.
