Malmaison Edinburgh
Interior Design
The Malmaison hotel chain is re-launching a new generation of hotels that are more contemporary in their approach to interior architecture.
Jestico+Whiles have been appointed to design a pared-back approach for the Malmaison Hotel brand that will continue the wit and classic, contemporary yet comfortable style that is at the heart of Malmaison Hotels. Already completed are Conference suites in Newcastle followed by recently open F+B areas for the Malmaison Manchester.
Next in line is largest so far Malmaison in Birmingham [189 rooms] and extension to the Malmaison Edinburgh. The Malmaison Edinburgh will be its second extension to the original building located in exotic Leith. It is due to start on site now and be completed by mid 2002. The hotel will achieve a further 40 rooms with other areas being enlarged and remodelled to facilitate more guests. The Malmaison Hotel Bar and Brasserie in particular is getting more modern look still keeping the inimitable Malmaision touch.
Each Malmaison Hotel is similar as well as different and the location’s context plays important role in its interpretation. In Edinburgh this will be a tradition of the city that is architecturally beautiful, rich and bonvivial, one of the most important port in Scotland where the Royal yacht Britannia is permanently moored. The Malmaison Hotel entrance will be more prominent with new landscaping and lighting to define it and accentuate.
The spaces are simple and architecturally conceived, and bejeweled with soft furnishing and different textures and colours. Malmaison Edinburgh beds and cabinets do not continue to the floor, so that space can be seen to flow under and around. The use of relevant artistic photographs continue the maritime theme. The hotel wall clock whispers ‘calm’ and wall photos in the room reminds you of the Chateau Malmaison – you know you are in the Mal….

Former Seaman’s Mission, restored 1994. Interior when reviewed first in 2000 let the Malmaison Hotel down, especially the heavly-ornate darkwood island bar.
The Malmaison Edinburgh hotel was refurbished in 2002. Jestico + Whiles Architects, London, were appointed for the interior design and worked with Ferrier Crawford as executive architects: completed May 2002. The grand entry now sadly weakened by new housing, Queens Quay, on what used to be open space.
