MDes Int. Architecture
Programme leader:
Frazer Macdonald Hay BA [HONS] Int. Architecture;MCSD,PgCTLHE
The MDes Interior Architecture programme at Napier University is structured on a one year full-time or two year part-time attendance basis. The programme has been developed as a response to the increased awareness in re-cycling and re-using space as an essential way to breathe new life into our built environment. It’s an approach that acknowledges embodied energy and which depends on the designer’s analytical ability to manipulate the host environment’s structural and contextual information successfully, which means understanding its architectural DNA.
The programme explores the idea of Interior Architecture as an intervention on a variety of scales. This may include architectural surgery, urban interventions and even exhibition design. There is also a growing link to the theories of contemporary conservation, regeneration and innovation.
The study of Interior Architecture takes place within a broad knowledge and skills base that includes architecture, film, photography, interdisciplinary design, and urbanism. Central to the Interior Architecture programme of study is the process of design whilst engaging with its associated and complementary disciplines. The programme is designed to provide diversity in areas of interest and teaching methods, and its aim is to connect high levels of technical proficiency to complex intellectual agendas in an atmosphere of lively and informed debate structured around a series of studio projects. The culture is supported by lectures, seminars and tutorials designed to inspire and explore architectural expression within a variety of host conditions, promoting investigation and testing of the techniques, technologies and knowledge.
Combining a high degree of creativity with technical expertise, this course will enable you to visualise and plan interiors from an architectural perspective. Backed by industry leaders and held in high regard within the field, it has the distinction of being the only course of its kind in Scotland. Recent graduates have featured in many student and mainstream awards; an indication of the high standards achieved in this extremely competitive field.
