Location: 7-11 Robertson’s close and 20-30 Sciennes, Edinburgh, Scotland
In the autumn of 2012 Bergmark Architects, leading a multi-disciplinary team, won a competitive bid to design and deliver two extensions to student housing complexes in the centre of Edinburgh; at Sciennes and Robertson’s Close.
Both projects consisted of forming new building blocks containing student common rooms and wardens’ offices within internal courtyards which previously housed car parking, bin stores and laundry blocks.
Sciennes was completed in October 2013 and Robertson’s Close in early 2014. Both on programme and within the budget. The building at Robertson’s Close takes advantage of a sloping site, with a double height space and a mezzanine covered by a monopitched roof following the gradient of the site. Full height glazing to the front connects the building visually with the student residences. Sciennes had to be designed with a different approach, in order not to overshadow and overlook neighbours, and was designed as single storey, flat-roofed building with glazing to the internal courtyards and South facing skylights.
