The owners of this Edinburgh home faced just that issue, but after the walls were taken down, the result was a large and airy ground-floor space and the perfect spot for the open-plan kitchen-diner they had longed for.

Architects Austin-Smith:Lord appointed to refurbish the four upper storeys of their category B listed property at 21 Hill Place in Edinburgh, by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Prominently positioned facing Nicolson Square, it is one of the few surviving buildings that Thomas P Marwick was responsible for designing in its entirety.
