Eastfield Medical Centre

The new Eastfield Medical Centre in Penicuik by Campbell and Arnott is the latest in a string of centres the practice has designed which are changing the face of medical centres north of the border.

It has been designed to provide improved, updated and enlarged accommodation for the Eastfield Medical Practice and the Community Mental Health Team with additional flexible accommodation for visiting consultants.

It occupies part of a triangular site on Eastfield Farm Road, utilising an existing access into the large new car park and positioned to retain the dominant mature trees down one side of the site.

The resulting L shaped building form is part two storey; the consulting, treatment, interview and clinic rooms are located on the ground floor with staff accommodation, meeting rooms and offices upstairs.

Staff enter the building conveniently at the end of each wing with patients being led to the main entrance in the centre of the building via a landscaped courtyard. The bright double height entrance foyer has clear circulation to each of the two reception desks and waiting areas. The waiting spaces make the most of natural daylight and views to the gardens and trees outside.

The materials were chosen with minimal maintenance in mind. Externally the building finishes comprise untreated Douglas Fir timber cladding, areas of white and red render, silver grey aluminium faced timber windows and a mill finished standing seam aluminium roof.

The use of a shallow plan allows natural daylight and natural ventilation into all areas of the building, creating a comfortable, user friendly environment and minimising running costs. Solar shading around the large courtyard windows deals with potential overheating in the summer.

The building is proving to be a great success and has received an enthusiastic response from both staff and patients alike.
