St Mary’s Edinburgh is located in the West End: the spires can be seen to the west down Princes Street and form an integral part in the famous views of Edinburgh from Calton Hill

Sir George Gilbert Scott’s design was selected in an architectural competition from a shortlist of six. His brother Giles had previously also won the Liverpool Cathedral competition.

Two more towers were requested after this architectural competition. The central larger spire sits on axis with Princes Street, and due to the grid shift the western towers sit slightly to the left.
