How to properly insulate your garage

Garages are often neglected and simply become a place for forgotten possessions to gather dust. But with a little effort, yours can be transformed.
Whether you simply want a more organised space or a new home office, good insulation is key. Not only does it improve comfort levels, but it can also increase your property’s value and even reduce your energy bills.
Assess your garage’s insulation status
Before starting your project, take some time to identify all the parts of your garage that require additional or new insulation. Investigate the walls, ceiling, floor and doors to get a full understanding of what you’re dealing with.
If you skip this step, you risk paying for upgrades that aren’t as effective as you’d hoped. You may also miss out on a discount if you’re hiring a firm to take care of things for you.
Select appropriate materials
The materials you use will depend on the structure of your garage and also how you intend to use it. For example, you’ll want a higher degree of insulation if you’re planning a conversion.
Rigid foam boards and fibreglass are the most common methods for insulating a garage in the UK. A key reason for this is that our garages are typically constructed without a cavity wall. The insulating materials can be attached directly to the interior wall or you can build a stud wall to create a cavity for thicker insulation.
If you’re concerned about losing space by building a stud wall, boarding can be added to the exterior wall and then covered with a new render.
You’ll want to ensure you’ve got double-glazed windows and an insulated garage door to help retain as much heat as possible, too.
Check building regulations
If you’re planning to continue using your garage in the same way, you shouldn’t need to worry about building regulations. However, a conversion is classed as a change of use, and to make it habitable you’ll need to ensure it hits the mark. Among the things you’ll need to consider are:
- Structural issues: The foundations may need to be reinforced.
- Fire safety: Escape routes and fireproofing are essential.
- Electrics: You’ll need a qualified technician to sort this for you.
- Ventilation: This will help avoid damp from occurring.
- Acoustics: Some soundproofing may be required.
See if you can get a grant
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) was established to improve the energy efficiency of homes across the country. You may be able to get free or cheaper insulation if your home has an EPC rating of D-G and is in council tax bands A-D in England (A-E in Scotland and Wales. This scheme covers cavity wall insulation, so if your garage is not separate from your property then it will be covered.
